Chapter 24

Before going to Holly’s place, Gwynn stopped at the motel, changed into sweats, and went to the office to let Cyrus know she was moving.

Smiling at him, she strolled through the doorway. “Hey. Your parking lot is almost full, you must have close to a full house for the weekend.”

He returned her smile. “Tonight, we only have one vacancy. None tomorrow. Pushing on the ‘No Vacancy’ sign will be nice. However, there could be a problem if Mr. Smith doesn’t checkout.”

“He’s still here?”

“Yes. He never came down for breakfast. He didn’t answer his phone when I called around noon. In case he took off without checking out—that happens sometimes when a guest pays with a credit card—I had housekeeping check if he had vacated his room. His belongings are there, and it didn’t appear he’d slept in his bed. Like the prior time he stayed with us, he paid cash for the room and put down a deposit. I can’t imagine he’d take off without collecting it and his things.”

“Maybe he was in an accident or something.” Gwynn wondered if he had taken off because he’d poisoned the wrong person and, assuming he got paid in advance, figured his employer would want their money back. Or, maybe the goal was to poison Corbin as well as Arnold. Since Idell was skilled at evading the law, he might’ve decided it was too risky to complete the agreement.

Cyrus rubbed his chin. “I called. No Jeeps have been in an accident in or around Riverton since Smith checked in.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Wait until tomorrow morning. If he hasn’t showed up by then, I’ll have his room cleared out and cleaned. His belongings will be put into our storage room and then I’ll give him a week or so to collect them.”

“Did he leave a phone number?”

“Yes. It goes directly to voice mail. I’ve left a couple of messages.”

Wanting to go through his belongings, Gwynn volunteered, “I could pack up his things and move them.”

“It’ll have to be early, so housekeeping can get it ready for a guest arriving at ten. And then we have nine checkouts and nine check ins. There won’t be a room to spare.”

“I can do it early, but you’ll have a vacancy tomorrow. I ran into an old friend. We were best friends in high school. She’s housesitting for her grandfather and wants me to move in with her.” Gwynn knew Cyrus and Lucy had grown fond of her and guessed her move would be easier on them saying that instead of telling them she’d be renting a room from her friend. “I’ll still be close by if you need any help. I also don’t want to miss Aunt Lucy’s breakfasts, so I’ll be around.”

He stepped around the counter and gave Gwynn a hug. “I hate to see you go.”

“I’m not going that far. Her place is only a couple of miles away. I’ll be moving there tomorrow right after I help pack up Mr. Smith’s stuff.
